Hello everyone Nick Rosa here again to bring you the Friday fantasy baseball recap! I hope everyone is having a better than average fantasy week. We have a lot to talk about and it seems that, not just in baseball, but in other sports as well, injuries are the key thing that has to be discussed. The Zack Greinke situation, the Jose Reyes situation, and I have to mention, the Kobe Bryant injury which is so devastating. Thank god Fantasy Basketball is over with right? Anyway here is Friday’s recap and hope you can better your squad with a little information!
Jose Reyes: 1-4 with two RBIS and a stolen base. We still have to wait for the MRI results but it seems Reyes severely sprained his ankle on a slide into second base Friday night. He had to be carted off the field and is looking at a one to three month timetable before he can return. Probably the only good thing out of Toronto this year so far, he was batting .395 with five stolen bases so far which was making owners really happy. Better than I expected. It’s a shame for owners when free agency for middle infielders is already very scarce. UPDATE: I’m sure you’ve heard, Jose will be out three months. Go grab yourself some Emilio Bonifacio! Quick!
Kevin Youkilis: 3-3 with a run, one RBI, and a walk. He is now batting .424 on the year and is the hottest Yankee as the second week comes to a close. The Yankees are playing much better this week and look much better than their first five games. Youk is making fantasy owners very happy so keep sticking with him in your lineup. He looks super healthy and hopefully he can play a full season this year because he hasn’t played in more than 130 games since 2009. By the way it seems that he is still the King of OBP in 2013.
Starlin Castro: 2-5 with a home run, a run, and two RBIs. Castro saved the day for the cubs with a walk off double to give Sergio Romo his first blown save of the year. He already had six saves on the year which is pretty awesome for fantasy owners. That’s a lot of saves in the first two weeks. Dioner Navarro delivered the pinch hit solo shot for the tie in the ninth. Castro is hitting .289, which we all expect to be higher by season’s end, and maybe showing signs of things to come. He should be in all lineups.
Brandon Phillips: 2-5 with two home runs, two runs, and three RBIs. Brandon Phillips is now batting .318 after last night and is still considered one of the best second basemen in the game today. He brings a lot of swag to Cincinnati and will continue to show power and drive in some runs on the stacked offense of the Reds. Phillips also has four homers now and could look to break 20 once again.
Andrew McCutchen: 2-4 with a home run, a run, and three RBIs. The Pirates aren’t doing too hot this year. McCutchen is also off to a slow 2013 and isn’t doing justice as the first round pick. It is still way too early to be judging and expect him to still hit over or around the .300 mark. It was only his second homer of the year but he did grab three RBIs to push the pirates to a win over Cincy. He’s still going to be a great source of production.
Bryce Harper: 1-4 with a home run, one run, two RBIs, and a walk. Harper is the truest! I wasn’t expecting him to be doing this. He is actually showing up Mike Trout in the beginning of 2013, hell he’s showing up almost all of MLB. Hitting .400 and five homers in his first two weeks, he is shooting for the stars and will probably do more damage than anyone thought. At 20 years old he is helping the Nats (7-3) keep pace with the Braves (9-1).
Justin Masterson, Jose Quintana, and Nick Swisher: This was a neck and neck game the entire nine innings. Masterson had a complete game shutout with one BB and seven strikeouts and improved to 3-0 with a 0.41era in 2013. Quintana had his first good game of the season going seven scoreless innings giving up one hit, 0BB, and seven strikeouts. He proved last year he could pitch but could be spotty. If you have some room for an extra SP or if you need to grab someone due to injury, he definitely could be a solid bottom of the order starter for you. Swisher was also the hero in the ninth with an RBI single to win the game over the White Sox in the bottom of the ninth. He was only 1-3 and is batting .258 on the year but could turn things around and could turn up around 20 homers as he usually does. Don’t expect to see higher than .270 though it just won’t happen if you ask me.
Shelby Miller: 7IP, one hit, and 8Ks. Shelby Miller is off to a great start and if he’s still a free agent he should be added now. Back to back amazing starts from the youngster is showing tremendously good signs early in 2013. He shutout the Brewers last night to improve to 2-0 with a 1.46 era on the year and has grabbed my FULL attention. Really good stuff.
Bud Norris: 7IP, 3 hits, 2BB, 5Ks. He improved to 2-1 with a 1.96 era. It’s Bud Norris, how long can it really last in Houston? But I guess get him while he’s hot. He shutdown the Angels last night with arguably the best offense in MLB. For a player like him that is impressive.
Justin Maxwell: 2-4 with a home run, one run, and two RBIs. Jose Altuve and Maxwell have been a great one two punch so far for Houston this season. Altuve is hitting .364 and Maxwell has a .359 average. You don’t see that from any other teams. It was his first home run of the year but he can probably reach between 10-12. Good for mixed leagues and someone to grab right now!
Prince Fielder: 4-5 with one home run, one run, three RBIs. He was the Tigers entire offense last night and is off to big start in 2013. Fielder launched his third home run and fourth double to go along with four hits but still wasn’t enough as Oakland won 4-3 and are now 9-2. Now hitting .417 Fielder should have a monster year and possible better numbers than 2012.
Dexter Fowler: 2-4 with two home runs, two runs, two RBISs, and a walk. I was extremely upset when I didn’t get to draft Fowler and now really dying inside because I don’t have him. He launched two home runs and now has six on the year. He homered in the ninth on back to back solo shots with Josh Rutledge off Huston Street to make the comeback against San Diego. Fowler is now hitting .325 and is only expected to keep going with what he’s doing. Arguably the best leadoff hitter in baseball.
Game of the Night: Mets 16 and the Twins 5.
Mets fans actually have reason to be happy. I haven’t seen a Met outburst like this in years! The Mets one through five had 12 of the 16 runs, 10 hits, and 13 RBIs. John Buck is a steal at catcher this year and hit his sixth home run of the year and grabbed another four RBIs with a monster grand slam! He finished 1-5 with the grand slam and two runs scored. David Wright and Daniel Murphy also added four RBIs of their own on a 3-5 night from Wright and 4-5 from Murphy. They are now 6-4 and playing good baseball. Any of these guys should be in all lineups!
That’s Friday’s recap everyone. Hope you all enjoy and I’ll see you all tomorrow for Saturday’s recap and more fantasy news and insight! Any questions you can reach me @NickRosa4. Go check out all the other fantasy news and streamers from throughout the week. Good luck!
